As the Spanish season heads for a Christmas break, Real Madrid will be happy with their position in the Liga and Champions League but will also be apprehensive about their ClA?sico loss to Barcelona. After all, this was the game which was supposed to bring back the baton of supremacy to the Spanish capital, a game which most of the coaches had predicted to go Realai??i??s way, a game which fans felt was finally in which Pep Guardiola will be outwitted and his team outsmarted at Santiago BernabAi??u.
Instead, the result was diametric. Pep Guardiola and his seemingly invincible team triumphed at the back of a tactical masterstroke for which Mourinho, the special one, had no answer. It did not help matters that Cristiano Ronaldo was adamant not to score and sanctify Lionel Messi as the best player in the world. The team got tired as the match progressed and it became rather difficult to hold the ball as the players rushed forward at every opportunity ending up losing the ball.
The Manita last season dented Real’s and Mourinho’s image but the Copa Del Rey victory managed to put some sheen back into the club and the manager. The impressive performances in the Spanish Supercup, the second season under Mourinho and the much-talked about ability of the Portuguese to learn from his mistakes, all pointed in a savory direction. But, it was not meant to be. Real Madrid may be at the top of the table but they have been reminded that they are still the second best team in the league.

So, what can Mourinho do better? Sign new players? Alter his tactics?
New Players
After acquiring some of the best names in the world of football, the Spanish giants donai??i??t have to add anybody in particular. They have a player in every position that can fit into various formations. Only a couple of teams in the world can boast of such a squad. So, more new players isnai??i??t going to work any wonders as such for Real Madrid.
Tactics
Real Madrid play a 4-2-3-1 primarily. Though this formation allows Mourinho to attack and press in the opening quarter of the match, the four man offense hasnai??i??t been particularly effective against Pepai??i??s BarAi??a. After being stifled for a brief interval initially, Barcelona have always managed to find a groove as the match has progressed and ended up as deserving victors whenever they triumphed.
Mourinho started playing a 4-2-3-1 at Inter where he could afford to sit back and then counter attack. He could even employ his primary striker as a fullback when the situation arose. But at Real Madrid, such tactics will not work. The fans, the President and the players relish playing a more fluid attacking game which means that Mourinho cannot go back to his Inter model. So, he refined his formation to suit Real Madrid and gave more licenses to players to go forward and encouraging them to press high up the pitch playing a medium block in defence.
This tactical change has worked wonders with other teams but has failed badly against Barcelona because the players cannot see enough of the ball and to add more misery, the Catalans have one of the finest pressing games in modern football. So, Madrid are dependent too much on counter attacks and press high up the pitch running around to induce the opposition into mistakes ai??i?? most recently Victor ValdAi??s. When Los Blancos get the ball, they try to circulate the ball too fast, more like in a hurry, ending up losing the ball.
The most reasonable approach when facing Barcelona for Mourinho can be to shift back to his 4-3-3; thereby gaining a bit of control in the midfield. With a player like Nuri Sahin on the bench, the former Chelsea gaffer has the option of teaming the Turkish international with the heartbeat of the team ai??i?? Alonso. That enables the midfield to be more in control as both of them are renowned for not losing the ball cheaply and making plays that can be tough to read. Add Lass or Khedira to the mix and you can have a solid center midfield which can make and break plays consistently.
The above tactical adjustment will mean that Real Madrid will not have a primary playmaker which Mourinho prefers but with Sahin playing a little ahead of Alonso and Karim Benzema dropping deep to pick up the ball, Real Madrid have the luxury of not playing an actual playmaker. With Di Maria flying down the wings and Ronaldo getting into good spaces and dribbling his way into the box, the Madrid side will have no problems on the offensive front.
The above arrangement poses some uncomfortable questions. What about Ai??zil and KakA?? Considering how Mourinho prefers to play against BarAi??a, playing either of them as play makers may not be too favorable for the team. They can play on either wings depending on the game play or come on later to alter the course of the team.
The other problem the side has faced has been the ability to press and maintain a high tempo through the course of the match. It is practically impossible to maintain a high tempo for the entire ninety minutes and press high all the time. Mourinho needs to ensure that his team can press for most of the match without feeling tired and more importantly effectively.
The other complaint with Mourinhoai??i??s Real Madrid is their reluctant nature to keep the ball for a good period of time. Real Madrid have the resources and players who can keep the ball and play a patient game passing around. They have the personnel to control the game and when you have such resources at disposal, why not utilize them for the same?
Inspite of all the preparations and the hullabaloo about Real Madridai??i??s famed counter attacks, BarAi??a managed to win comfortably thanks to a brilliant tactical switch. There is no doubt that the future ClA?sicos will also be decided by tactics. It remains to be seen whose tactics.
