In 1887, ai???Jubilee clubai??? started its journey under Nawab Aminul Islam.Ai??From Jubilee to Crescent to Hamidia and then finally to Mohammedan Sporting – the club which would then prove to be one of the most successful clubs in Indian football history, fondly known as “The Black Panthers” started itsAi??voyage in 1891.
Success kissed the clubai??i??s feet first in 1934, courtesy the Calcutta Football League title. And what a success it was! They went on to create a terrific milestone of winning 5 back to back Kolkata League titles. The likes of Habib, Rashid, Sabu, Masum and hosts of other talented playersAi??literally ran the opponents out of fuel. 1939ai??i??s title walked its way to the Mariners tent but 1940 and 1941 yet again belonged to the Black Panthers. And yes, Mohammedan had not finished writing pages of football history. There was more to come which is evident from the very fact that Mohammedan Sporting Club was the first Indian team to win the Durand Cup, thereby crushing the monopoly of British teams in the oldest tournament of Indian football.

Till 1967, a galore of trophies illuminated the club’s cabinet,Ai??but quite surprisingly after 1987ai??i??s Rovers cup they havenai??i??t, till date, conquered a major tournament in the first division of Indian football. The much discussed Calcutta Football League last made its way to their tent way back in 1981. Is there a question or two being asked about their performance in NFL or I-League? Well, their performance in Indiaai??i??s avatar of Barclays Premier LeagueAi??has been nothing less than pathetic.
Presently they do not feature in the first division of Indian National Football League and have failed to even qualify from second division this year as well. Isnai??i??t it amazing that a club which once roared in the jungles of Indian football is now almost rubbed of the main circuit? Much to the colour of their jerseys – the black-&-white -Ai??they seem to be still drenched in the Black and White era. The present scenario makes one wonder whether the club is still busy recollecting memories of their Golden era and letting the present era go in shatters.
The club did suffer a dearth of sponsors but the question remains if the other two giants of Kolkata Football can rope in sponsors then why not Mohammedan? They won the 2nd division NFL in the year 2006 but got relegated in the subsequent years. Standing in the year 2011 when leading dailies pen down possible contenders of Calcutta Football League, Mohammedan does not come in to the picture. Today Prayag United draws more attention than this heritage club. Shouldnai??i??t the ai???Black and Whitesai??i?? garner a lesson from United Sports Club? United was a team which started journey from 5th division and is now giving the budget teams of Indian football a run for their money.
Both Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have their own grounds where they practice regularly. But Mohammedan have a ground in name only. Sometimes the ground condition is so worse that the players have to practice on the sidelines of Red Road! Such is the plight of this historic outfit of-late.
Well, is this the same Mohammedan Sporting which would make thousands of supporters flock the ground to watch the likes of Habib and Prasun Banerjee in action? Is this the same Mohammedan which was once considered a fierce powerhouse in the country? Is this the same Mohammedan which produced the first Indian player to go and play abroad? Thousands of supporters are demanding an answer to these questions. From Mike Okoro to Theodore Sunday, from Subhash Bhowmick to Shabbir Ali to Fuja Tope, they have tried and tested everything with a result as good as nil. Independence Cup and Airlines Gold Cup is what Mohammedan satisfies itself with at the moment,Ai??when the likes of Mohun Bagan andAi??East BengalAi??sweat it out for Federation cups and I-Leagues.

This year the club has roped in veteran Alok Banerjee, who has reached his first goal by successfully making Mohammedan qualify for the premier division of Calcutta Football League and in the initial stages the club indeed has performed well, giving its fans something to cheer about. But yeah, as they say ai???Miles to go before I sleepai??? -Ai??will this form continue? Is this the beginning of something new or much like the previousAi??seasons, next year too we will have a Mohammedan less I-League?
The best fortune teller in this case is surely time . At the end of a recently concluded match Mr. Alok Mukherjee said that his team was ready for East Bengal or Mohun Bagan whatsoever. This attitude is surely giving the supporters of Mohammedan Sporting a fresh surge of optimism.Ai??
