I-League 2011-12: Preview and Predictions ai??i?? Round 2

Goan outfit Dempo SC Ai??demolished Mumbai FC yesterday in the first encounter of Ai??I-league’s round two by four goals to nil which included a brace by Ranti Martins – who scored the winner against Salgaocar SC last weekend. With six matches still to go in this round , TheHardTackle here previews the remaining second round matches of I-league scheduled to take place on 28th October 2011.

Pune FC v SC Goa (6:30 PM)

Derrick Pereiraai??i??s Red Lizards welcome Sporting Club De Goa on their home soil as both the teams look to register their first wins in this edition of I-league. Pune FC drew their first match against another new comer, Shillong Lajong in a goalless stalemate at Balewadi Sports Complex. Coach Pereira would like his team to step on the gas and try to get rid of the nerves, which were quite evident in his sideai??i??s satisfactory opening game, but it eventually meant loss of two home points. Pune FC was guilty of muffing some golden opportunities in the first half, and would be looking to rectify the mistakes in this home match.

Jeje - Hopefully will have his scoring boots on.

Pune FC is all set to miss the services of Paresh Shivalkar, who is still nursing a hamstring injury the striker sustained in the Durand Cup. Barring Subrata Pal and Mandjou Keita, Pune FCai??i??s full squad would be available for selection for this crucial match. Midfielder Asim Hasan could be on the bench, adding to the reserve artillery for the Red Lizards.

Pune FC expected line up:Ai??Shaninlal (GK) , Tabia , Costa , Chika , Gurjinder , Baldeep , Venkatesh , Arata , Jeje , Douhou , Lester

Making their presence felt after a year in the top flight of Indian football, Sporting Club from Goa are once again back to challenge for the league. This would be the first away game for the Flaming OranjeAi??as they make a short trip to Pune for their second match of the season. SC Goa played out a tough 2-2 draw in their opening match against Prayag United in Goa to clinch their first point of the season. The new recruit James Moga from South Sudan definitely made his presence felt on his debut match, as it was his brace which brought a point home, which otherwise would have been an opening day home defeat for the Goans. Coach Ekendra Singh has a right mixture of experience like Ogba Kalu in the midfield and youngsters like Victorino, Jovel and James hovering around him. SC Goa would be hoping to garner all three points and showcase the form which the Goan side was used to last season in the League-2.

SC Goa expected line up:Ai??Milagrio(gk), Samananda, Keita, Freiman, Kalu, James, Jovel, Prabhjot, Rowlin, Boboi, Victorino

TheHardTackleai??i??s Man To Watch Out For:

Pierre Douhou (Pune FC)

James Moga (SC Goa )

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction:

Pune FC 0 – 1Ai??SC Goa

Shillong Lajong FC v HAL SC (3:00 PM)

Coach Pradhyum Reddyai??i??s team is up and running in their second I-league season. The side from Meghalaya started their campaign with a gritty away draw against much fancied Pune FC side. The federation cup semi finalists now welcome the Bangalore side HAL to Khuman Lampak Stadium in Imphal, Manipur. The stadium has a capacity of about thirty thousand and keeping in mind the popularity of the Reds in the north east, the stadium is predicted to be jam packed for the game.Ai?? Certainly, this would just feel like a home match for the Shillong players, as they look to register their first win of the season. The team was certainly very attack minded in their last game as the Pune FC goalkeeper Shahinlal Meloly received the Man of the Match, and this stamps their authority in an away game. Keeping the off pitch debacle with Vasco SC aside, coach Reddy is expected to deploy the same side which garnered a point in a nervy opener at Balewadi.

Shillong Lajong expected line-up: Soram (GK), Passah , Ralte , Subhash , Lallchhuanmawia , Lalramluaha , Lallimthara , Haokip , Menyongar, Lyngdoh

Bangalore greens HAL started off their campaign with a disheartening home loss to Chirag United Kerala at the all new FIFA approved Bangalore football stadium. HAL showed some fight and grit after they were found chasing the game early. Coach Thyagraj would be hoping that his side start linking together as his team would be up against a stiff challenge to pick up points away from home, after a long journey. These are the games, from which HAL should be clinching some points, as already it seems to be long tough season for the side from Bengaluru.

HAL expected line-up: P Pramod, Chanandeep, Adeola, Kennath, Debnath, D.Prakash, Ajit Singh, James Singh, Meetei, Vinod Kumar, Amaba

Shillong: They should pick up three points today

TheHardTackleai??i??s Man To Watch Out For:

John Menyongar (Shillong Lajong FC)

M.Meetei (HAL SC)

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction:

Shillong Lajong FC 2 – 0 HAL SC

Salgaocar SC v Pailan Arrows (3:00 PM)

After being handed a loss in their first match of the campaign the I-league defending champions Salgaocar SC would be eagerly waiting to step on the field against the Pailan Arrows from Kolkata. Bencherifaai??i??s men had a lacklustre round one match against Armando Calacoai??i??s men as the champions failed to create decent chances against Dempo SC. Bencherifa failed with his tactic of playing with a lone striker and one could expect some shaking up in the midfield as well as the frontline before their clash in the afternoon.Ai?? Francis Fernandes who came off the bench for SSC against Dempo might get the nod over Olivera in the midfield after the later had a game to forget against Dempo SC.Ai?? SSCai??i??s Japanese recruitAi??Ryuji Sueoka was playing behind Chidi Edeh and looked completely out of place; this may cause their manager to move him next to the Nigerian instead of playing Ryuji behind him. The Fed Cup champions were guilty of giving away possession on far too many occasions last week and cannot afford to repeat their performance against the Arrows if they want to get their title defence back on track.

Salgaocar SC expected line up: Karanjit,Ai??Khelemba Singh,Ai??Saha, Meetei, Sabrosa,Ai??Francis Fernandes, C.Ai??Fernandes,Ai??Tomba Singh, Ahmed, Ryuji, Chidi

The Moroccan's got a point to prove

Their opponents of round two – Pailan Arrows were stream rolled over by Mohun Bagan as a result of Odafa Okolieai??i??s hat trick. Managed by Sukhwinder Singh, Arrows went in the lead in the 8th minute but were constantly tested by Bagan. Their defence held onto the lead for 66Ai??minutes but once Mohun Bagan equalized, the young boys from Arrows completely lost the plot. Singh knows that his team lacked vision which might force him to field Shilton in the starting eleven against the mighty Salgaocar. The backline failed to deal with constant pressure applied by Bagan and the last quarter of an hour which would be the major area of concern for Singh, who knows that Salgaocar will come hard at them. Their two forwards in the front who completed their 4-4-2 formation lacked creativity and finishing skills which can be fulfilled by the inclusion of Mizo striker Malsawmfela.

Arrows will definitely not give in without a fight but it looks highly unlikely they would trouble the Goan giants on the park during their encounter.

Pailan Arrows expected lineup: N Kumar, Devrani, Fanai, Ghosh, Amarwant, Bikramjit, Jibon Singh, Shilton D’Silva, Ajay Singh, Holi Charan, Malsawmfela

TheHardTackleai??i??s Man To Watch Out For:

Chidi Edeh (Salgaocar SC)

Malsawmfela (Pailan Arrows)

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction:

Salgaocar SC 2 – 0 Pailan Arrows

Mohun Bagan v Chirag United Club Kerala (3:30 PM)

Rallied by Odafaai??i??s hat trick Mohun Bagan came back from being a goal down to pick up a win in their first match of the 2011-12 I-league season last weekend.Ai?? The Mariners would look to carry on their form into the second round as well where they meet Chirag United Kerala who were lucky to pick up a win in their first encounter against HAL SC.

The pair of Odafa and Chhteri are expected to run havoc among the backline of the side from Kerala. It was the introduction of Baganai??i??s skipper Barreto in second half that changed the tempo of the match in their favour and with the Brazilian almost fit, Bhattacharya is most likely to start with the veteran in order to give their frontline more advantage over their weaker opponents. Lima, Nabi and Jewel Raja will most likely be retained in the midfield to give the Green and Maroons more versatility. Dhanarajan, Debnath and Anwar Ali are almost a certainty in the backline of Mohun Bagan. Mukherjee is expected to be retained between the sticks despite him conceding a shocking goal against Pailan Arrows.

Mohun Bagan expected lineup: Mukherjee, Dutta, Dhanrajan, Debnath, Anwar, Silva, Raja, Nabi, Barreto, Chhetri, Odafa

Odafa: How many will he score tonight?

Chirag United Kerala started their campaign with a win but should thank their stars and HAL SCai??i??s goalkeeper P. Pramod. A below par performance by their team was good enough against HAL but against Mohun Bagan it will be an altogether different ball game.Ai?? The Kerala outfit will rely heavily on the experience of their skipper Ajayan who will be pulling the strings on his team from the midfield. In defence their lone hope is Charles Dzisah who literally won the game for Chirag United Kerala on his own with his astute defending in Banglore in round one of the league. They desperately need to improve upon their last weekai??i??s performance if they donai??i??t want to get embarrassed by the mighty Mohun Bagan.

Chirag United Kerala expected lineup: Sharat, Jagdeep, Issac, Dzisah, Noushad, Sabas, Ajayan, Asif, Vignesh, Matricciani, Vineeth

TheHardTackleai??i??s Man To Watch Out For:

Sunil Chhetri (Mohun Bagan)

Charles Dzisah (Chirag United Club Kerala)

TheHardTackleai??i??s Prediction:

Mohun Bagan 4 ai??i?? 0Ai??Chirag United Club Kerala

CHURCHILL BROTHERS v AIR INDIA

3:45 P.M, FATORDA

***

Churchill Brothers play their first home game of the season against struggling Air India. Buoyed after their superb 1-0 victory against East Bengal away, the Goan team will be looking forward to another 3 points against The Airmen who were demolished 1-4 by Mumbai FC in the previous game. Churchill didnai??i??t create many chances against East Bengal but they scored from one of the few chances they got and held their nerve. The defense under the stewardship of Gourmangi Singh and Antun Kovacic did a fabulous job to control the likes of Tolgay Ozbay and Robin Singh. They will be missing their inspirational Brazilian midfielder Beto who will have to sit out of this game too due to a thigh injury. He is expected to be out for 2-3 weeks. Also a doubtful started is pacy midfielder Bineesh Balan who had to be stretchered off due to a hamstring pull last game.

Coach Manuel Gomes will be hoping for another solid performance from his side. He is not expected to make any changes from the side that played East Bengal except for the forced change due to Balanai??i??s injury. Jerry Zirsanga who replaced Bineesh Balan in that game is likely to be handed a start in todayai??i??s game while Lenny Rodrigues will continue to fill in Betoai??i??s void at the centre of the park. N.D. Opara is in a rich vein of form having scored in the previous game and also been on target in the Durand Cup. He will partner Henri Antchouet in attack. Steven Dias and Jerry Zirsanga will play on the flanks. In the corresponding fixture last season, Churchill scored a 2-0 win over the Airmen with goals from Robert Lalthalma and Bineesh Balan. Both these players will be missing from the Churchill ranks today with Robert moving to East Bengal and Balan injured.

Air India coach Santosh Kashyap will be hoping for at least a point from this game and will draw solace from the fact that they held Churchill to a 2-2 drew last season at the Cooperage. They were demolished last week by Mumbai FC and will be hoping for that their defense does a much better job against the deadly strike pair of Opara and Antchouet. New signing in defense Lamine Tamba was a lone warrior against Mumbai FC and will need the support of his other three defenders if they have to take anything from this game. Santosh Kashyap is expected to start with Uttam Singh, Mandeep Singh and Chanchal Saha in defense along with Tamba. Their midfield will in all probability have the same look with Japanese Takayuki Omi, Allan Dias, Soccor Velho and Hringsolal Thomte.

Churchill Brothers expected Line-up: Opara, Atchouet, Lenny, Jerry, Gourmangi, Kovacic. Felix(gk) Raju, Denzil, Steven.

Air India expected line-up: Omi, Henry, Mandeep, Manjit, Soccor, Allan, Tamba, Manjit, Uttam, Ghosh (gk), Thomte

Thehardtackleai??i??s players to watch out for:

N.D. Opara (Churchill Brothers), Henry Ezeh (Air India)

Thehardtackleai??i??s prediction:

Churchill 2-0 Air India

Ai??EAST BENGAL v PRAYAG UNITED

6:30 P.M, SALT LAKE STADIUM

***

After a disappointing loss to Churchill Brothers in their opening game, East Bengal face a tricky Prayag United in an all Kolkata clash today. Trevor Morgan, after a brilliant debut season, will be under pressure to deliver this year from the Red and Gold faithful, but another Churchill like result would put him under the microscope again. Tolgay was the lone bright spark for them last game and the entire team will have to raise the bar if they have to put it across Prayag who will consider themselves unlucky not to have come from Goa with all three points againstAi?? Sporting. Trevor Morgan preferred Tolgay, Orji and Okpara as his three foreigners and left Scottish striker Alan Gow on the bench. It is not known whether he will hand Alan his first I-League start but he surely is in a dilemma. Tolgay, after his performance last week, has to start which means Trevor will have to leave out either Penn or Okpara from his starting line-up if he has to field Alan Gow.

The performance of Robin Singh was certainly not up to the mark and he will have to perform much better than that if he wishes to retain his place in the starting line-up. No such problems for Sanjay Sen and Prayag United. Their team seems to be gelling well and Yakubu looks fit as ever. Kayne Vincent too put in a good performance last game with an assist for one of Yakubuai??i??s goals. Lalkamal Bhowmick with the captainai??i??s armband was their driving force from midfield. He was at the heart of their every move against Sporting.

The signing of Deepak Mondal has lent solidity to their defence and Tolgay and Robin Singh will find it tough to get past him and Bello Rasaq. Ai??Arnab Mondal and Bapi Saha will be the other two defenders. Abhijit Mondal too had a good game under the bar though he could have dealt much better with the aerial balls that came his way. James Singh was a disappointment for them last game and was replaced early in the second half. The key to this game would be the midfield battle. Penn Orji v Lakamal Bhowmick would be the battle to watch out for. Vashum on the right for East Bengal will also have to deliver some good crosses to use the height of Robin Singh. This is a huge match for both sides especially for Trevor Morganai??i??s East Bengal who will be hoping for a draw at least if not a win. For Prayag and Sanjay Sen, revenge will be on their mind after the semi-final loss in the Federation Cup.

Prayag United expected line-up: James, Yakubu, Vincent, Rasaq, Deepak, Abhijit (gk), Soumik, Saha, Bhowmick, Arnab, Chakraborty

East BengalAi??expected line-up: Nandy (gk), Gaekwad, Okpara, Naoba, Roy, Vashum, Penn, Robin, Tolgay, Robert, Baljit

Thehardtackleai??i??s players to watch out for:

Tolgay Ozbay (East Bengal) Yusif Yakubu (Prayag United)

The hardtacklesai??i?? prediction:

Prayag United 1-1 East Bengal
