Fans could understand that Saunders would bring in new faces to get Rovers playing his way, but no one predicted anything so controversial.
Saundersai??i?? agent, Willie McKay, is well known in the football world through his clients including; Henri Camara, Joey Barton and Charles Nai??i??Zogbia and has beenAi??involved in some of the biggest transfer deals In history, such as the transfer of Ronaldiniho from PSG to Barcelona. He is also known for breaking transfer regulations on a number of occasions resulting in an arrest in 2007 and suspension in 2008.
It came as a surprise for Donny supporters when chairman, John Ryan, announced a deal with the agent who lives locally. Doncaster Rovers had agreed to pay McKay A?100 a week to bring in big named players on short term deals to help the club escape the dangerous relegation zone.
Fans were quick to criticise the plan, questioning the legality of the deal and whether it would actually benefit Doncaster Rovers Football Club. The club was also criticised by fans of other clubs who also failed to understand the benefit of the scheme. John Ryan had to step into the spotlight to explain the scheme further. It was revealed that McKay had contacted the FA for clarification where it was granted the go ahead and therefore ai???rubber stampedai??i??.
The deal is supposed to benefit the football club as well as McKay himself. The idea is that former or struggling top-flight players are encouraged to join on a short term deal, in order to help the club as well as showcasing their talents, hopefully attracting Premier League clubs to their ability. Players being brought in under the scheme are said to be paid only A?2,000 per week.
The first player to join Rovers under the new scheme was former Blackburn defender Pascal Chimbonda. He was closely followed by a loan move for Herita Ilunga from West Ham. Chris Kirkland followed suit but, after only one appearance had to return to his parent club through injury. Many other players have been linked with the club, such as Rob Hulse and Tomasz Kuszczak.
The biggest, and most controversial signing however, is that of El Hadji Diouf. The former Liverpool and Bolton forward was released by Blackburn in the summer and despite attracting interest from Russia, West Ham and Wigan he chose to join Doncaster Rovers.Ai??Diouf has always had a reputation within football, remembered mainly for spitting at fans and fellow footballers. Such a reputation caused panic amongst Rovers supporters, many of whom were worried what impact it could have on the club. The chairman was quoted as saying that Diouf is a ai???very nice manai??i??.
So far, each of the players has performed well, giving fans nothing to complain about. Diouf has scored twice from two appearances, giving Rovers their first win in six weeks. All is well and good at the club, with rumours still surrounding new signings. Fans have given the new transfer policy a chance which has so far paid off, but we have to ask whether it will have benefits in the long run. With players being allowed to sign temporarily and leave at the first opportunity, where does this leave the state of the team? How can the club keep a stable side when players are coming and going in a ai???revolving doorai??i?? type system?
It is not just Rovers fans that are worried about the future state of the club, especially when there are genuine, down to earth players who are happy to play for the club long term and not as a short stop off.

However, during this transitional period, Billy Sharp has grabbed the hearts of the British public as well as many around the world. Sharp missed Roversai??i?? home game against Coventry City due to ai???serious family issuesai??i??; with fans fearing Sharp was to leave on loan with a view to a permanent deal. It was later revealed that the million pound striker had lost his 2-day old son through illness. Before Tuesdayai??i??s game against Middlesbrough, Sharp announced that he would play and, if he scored, dedicate his goal to his son.
The Keepmoat took the time to celebrate Luey Jacobai??i??s life through a minuteai??i??s applause before the game. Sharp scored a goal described as being ‘from Heaven’ in the 16th minute, a dipping 20 yard volley, celebrating by lifting his shirt up to reveal the message, ai???Thatai??i??s for you Sonai??i??. Derby County, who played the following night, also decided to pay their respects through wearing black armbands.
Sharpai??i??s former club and boyhood team, Sheffield United, honoured the player by applauding in the 24th minute, with 24 being his former squad number. The Ipswich fans also gave the striker a standing ovation when he scored against them on Saturday and when he was substituted. This added to the long list of well wishers including Manchester United striker Michael Owen, Billy’s boyhood hero.
As Sharp decided to play only days after the death of his son, people across the country are praising Sharp as a true professional, especially in the light of the Carlos Tevez saga.
With players such as Sharp who are determined to play for a club, compared to those who are only here for a short time, it is hard to see a positive future for the club. Will players lose morale or will the changes spur them on to impress?
If the scheme works well, Rovers will be home and dry and even pushing higher up the table. Whereas if the scheme fails, the side could be left in danger in the lower leagues. Only time will tell for the club.
