Billed as a six-pointer, it was an important game stuck away in the Monday night schedules. Victory for Chelsea would have not only kept alive their own title ambitions after a recent resurgence in form, but opened the title race as a whole, with City only two points ahead of neighbours Manchester United going into the game. Victory for City would be an emphatic marker of intent however, as it would maintain a five-point lead at the top of the table having already played the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and now Chelsea away.
Extra spice was added to the mix by Villas-Boasai??i??s near-breakdown last week, as he ripped into the press for their coverage of Chelsea, adding that City themselves had been given an easy ride by journalists over the last year or so.
Line Ups:
Chelsea would have to make at least one change, with David Luiz suspended, having picked up his fifth booking of the season the previous week. Manchester City too had to cope without a defender, with Micah Richards ruled out through injury. Otherwise, they had a full squad to choose from, and there were few surprises in their line up. Chelsea once more left Torres and Lampard on the bench.

The Game
City started on fire, hunting down the Chelsea players in packs, as Aguero periodically moved high up the pitch to support Balotelli, and Cityai??i??s superb one-touch passing saw them well on top in the early stages. They took full advantage after only a couple of minutes, Aguero brilliantly breaking free from Terry to find Balotelli who shook off Ivanovic, rounded Cech, and slotted into the empty net. His reward was a cup of tea thrown from the stands. The pattern of play continued for the first quarter of the match. City were finding space in the final third, and Aguero shot wide when he perhaps should have scored, whilst Silva was denied a clear penalty for a foul by Bosingwa. City were to pay for not pushing home their advantage.

Chelsea had received huge criticism for their high defensive line, what Villas-Boas calls the line of block. They started the game with a medium line of block, but after the nervy start, began to play with a deeper defensive line, and this worked well, nullifying Cityai??i??s attacking threat. Suddenly, City werenai??i??t exploiting the space as well as before, and Chelsea were enjoying greater possession. City too were dropping back and not being as aggressive high up the pitch. The game was beginning to follow a similar pattern to Cityai??i??s game away to Bayern Munich in the Champions League ai??i?? a bright start, denied penalties, before the opposition took charge. The game was pretty even, but in the 34th minute Chelsea were level; Sturridge evading Clichy on the Chelsea right before crossing for Meireles to fire home. Blame can also be attributed to Yaya Toure, who failed to track his man into the penalty area, a common fault of his.

With little action to speak of after that, the teams went into the break level. The second half at first followed a similar pattern. Chelsea were seeing more of the ball still, but there were few chances to be had by either side.
The key moment came after 57 minutes. Gael Clichy saw red for a second bookable offence after tripping up Ramires. He could have no complaints. After that, City were fully on the defensive, and Chelsea spread the ball well on the flanks trying to find a way through. Cityai??i??s only attempt with ten men came from a low Mario Balotelli shot that Petr Cech saved comfortably.
With ten men, City reverted to a predictable 4-4-1, bringing on Kolo Toure to play at right-back, with Pablo Zabaleta going to left-back, Mancin clearly keen to keep his central defensive partnership the same. This shape worked reasonably well. Then came a 4-3-1-1 formation. Nigel de Jong came on for Silva and sat ahead of the back four, Milner and Barry were either side, and Toure played behind Balotelli. City couldnai??i??t hold on, but it took a penalty to decide the match ai??i?? Lescott was penalised for handball on a Sturridge shot that was going over, and Frank Lampard, who had come off the bench in the second half, kept his composure to hit the ball home, striking it down the middle as Joe Hart dived into the corner. After that, Chelsea saw the game out with ease.
Conclusions
There can be few complaints about the result ai??i?? Chelsea recovered from an early mauling to gain control on the game ai??i?? though it was a control consisting primarily of possession, with precious few chances for either side, and with both goalkeepers not required to make a serious save. City had themselves to blame, conceding early superiority, before putting in a lacklustre second half display. Key players didnai??i??t perform ai??i?? Clichy has had an excellent debut season at City, but had a bad night, allowing Sturridge to cross for Chelseaai??i??s equalizer, before receiving two text-book yellow cards. Lescottai??i??s handball was hardly deliberate as the rules state, but as his arms were raised, he was asking for trouble. Yaya Toure seemed to be uninterested in the whole match, spending more time slapping and kicking Mata than trying to control the midfield. His influence was greatly missed.
The result opens up the title race nicely, but it is still advantage Manchester City at this early stage. They will want to make amends at home to Arsenal on Sunday.
