Match Preview: The Viola Aim To Silence The Old Lady

ACF FIORENTINA

JUVENTUS FC
Stadio Artemio Franchi, Florence, Italy
March 6, 2010

It’s a rivalry which began in 1982 when the Scudetto went down to the final week of the season. Juventus were awarded a penalty to hand them the win they required, while a Fiorentina goal was disallowed in a goalless draw. It was enough to make the Fiorentina supporters irate – “Meglio secondi che ladri,” they said. “Better to be second than to be thieves”.

This one-side rivalry took an even uglier turn when eight years later Fiorentina’s Roberto Baggio was sold to the Turin giants. It is considered to be one of the fiercest games for the fans in Florence. However in Turin, they say its nothing when compared to their battles against Torino, Milan or Internazionale.

So it’s all about honour and pride for Fiorentina when Juventus visit Florence this weekend. Both these clubs have been considered among the stronger clubs in Serie A. However, the current season has not gone as smooth domestically as both the teams would have liked .

Current Position: 10th, 35 points
Current form: DLWLLL

The Viola are likely to rest key players for the champions league game in midweek but nonetheless they will look for sweet success over a club they love to hate.

Alberto Gilardino and Mario Santana return from injury to give the mid-table side a boost before the game. Juan Manuel Vargas and Cesare Natali are key absentees.

Manuel Pasqual, Marco Marchionni, Massimo Gobbi and Felipe are doubtfuls for the game.

JUVENTUS FC
Current Position: 5th, 41 points
Current form: LDWWWD

The giants from Turin have been given a timely boost by Vincenzo Iaquinta as he is likely to return following a lengthy injury lay-off while Claudio Marchisio has served his ban. Talks of resting Diego suggest there maybe a start for youngster Ciro Immobile alongside Del Piero.

Gianluigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi, Amauri, Martin Caceres, and Sebastian Giovinco make up the list of players which remain absent due to injury.

The Bianconeris need a win to stay in the race for the fourth spot or else risk being dealt a huge blow by missing out on the champions league next season.
